Key takeaways
The fastest growth is concentrated in chip-cycle names, and some of the rest was bought.
The double-digit organic growth is mostly in semiconductor equipment and test makers riding the chip and AI spending cycle. Elsewhere, acquisitions are inflating headlines.
One-time items can make this quarter’s margins look better than the business really is.
Several equipment and instrument makers, including Mettler-Toledo and NOV, booked one-time tariff refunds that lifted their reported gross margins, and other one-time gains flattered profitability elsewhere in the index. These items are not likely to repeat. Before you set a gross-margin target off a peer’s reported number, check how much of it is one-time.
Service steadies a down cycle, but it isn’t insulated from a regional shock.
At Otis, Metso, and NOV, aftermarket and maintenance revenue kept going while new-equipment sales softened. But Weatherford, SLB, Valmont, and Vestas all cited Middle East disruption, and Vestas’ service revenue fell even as its total revenue grew. If your service plan treats the installed base as a fixed annuity, this quarter is a good argument for modeling what happens when one region goes dark.
